After several years of no more than a handful of wins it seems things are looking up! Under second year coach Greg Whitmer the ladies from Barberton are currently sporting a 14 game win streak. After dropping the first three games this season the Magics have tasted nothing besides victory since…
Last season the ladies in purple made big improvements and continued into this season. With 8 upperclassmen who have experienced the before and after it’s safe to say they are enjoying the fruits of their labor, while staying hungry for more. They are doing it with a good mixture of experience and youth senior captains Heather Sykes, Bree Smith and Riley Ries lead the way for the Magic. Junior Macey Chik helps lead the charge for the Magics while starting PG Savannah Blackwell is a youthful bright spot as a sophomore.
It was obvious as early as last year that things were changing. Anyone who has seen the before and after sees a different Barberton team fundamentally. The Magics, behind Whitmer, has started a new direction in the program that is based on discipline, fundamentals and hard work. The practice I attended was ran very focused and disciplined and the kids were responding. They seem to be taking to the system without any resistance. With a win streak that Barberton hasn’t seen since the days since Pam and Willie Davis took the Magics to the state Final 4…I can understand why!
Full Barberton Schedule/Results
This Barberton team will face a few really good opponents before the season ends (vs. Southeast Feb. 9th, vs. Mogadore Feb. 14th and vs. Coventry Feb. 21st) to really test them and prepare them for a tough district. Even though they want to continue winning and be successful in the tournament there’s no denying the progress they’ve made and the successes they are enjoying are outstanding no matter how the season ends!
