In a game of hopeful state qualifiers Fairmont looked untouchable. After Wadsworth came in on fire and held their biggest lead of 17-11 late in the first Fairmont turned it up and never looked back. Wadsworth, a visibly fearless team, looked to get up and down the floor and use their superior depth to their advantage. The superstars of Fairmont proved to be too much however. Westbeld finished with 16 and the Duquesne recruit Chelsea Welch chipped in 10 points and 8 helpers. Most impressive was the way Welch controlled the offense and handled the Wadsworth pressure, helping KF to turn the ball over only 8 times. Alona Skipper and Danie Shafer both dropped in a trio of threes to jump start the Fairmont scoring. The Grizzlies struggled on the boards, being -16 in the rebound column and giving up 16 second chance points while only scoring 2 isn’t a recipe for success! Add in a poor shooting second half (7-25, 28%) and Wadsworth makes it pretty easy on Fairmont. Rachel Goddard and McKenzie O’Brien had a solid night for Coach Booth but he had to be particularly pleased with Freshman Jodi Johnson. Jodi scored 7, 1-1 from beyond the arc and 2-2 from the line. She also led the team in offensive rebounds on her way to the team high 6 boards. I expect both of these teams in Columbus, who knows, maybe a Round 2? However; if Columbus is in the Grizzlies’ future, which I believe it is, they will need to get a more solid contribution from Booth, Hassinger, and Robinson who were a combined 3-13 from the field.
